Woke up this morning to discover I’ve made the short-list for the 2014 Over The Edge New Writer of the Year, in the poetry category, as announced at Kevin Higgins & Susan Millar DuMars‘ monthly Over The Edge reading, in Galway, last night!
It’s getting exciting now, as all the entries have been whittled down to just 14 names for fiction and 12 for poetry. A winner will be chosen in each category, with one winner being chosen as New Writer of the Year.
When it gets to this stage in a competition there is usually very little to choose from in terms of the quality of the writing, so it’s really down to which pieces stand out for the judge, in this case, poet Eleanor Hooker. I recently judged the Open Mic readings at the Over The Edge Culture Night event and don’t envy Eleanor, having to choose between such a talented group of writers including Elizabeth Reapy, Maurice Devitt and Victoria Kennefick.
The winners will be announced at the next Over The Edge reading on 30th October, at the City Library in Galway.
Best of luck everyone!
